Statement

Bixs maps, monoprints and collages stem from his studies into the relationship of context and the experiential scales of the built environment.

In his maps he takes on the challenge of collaborating psyche and place. The shapes and creative coordination of which lend themselves to representing an invisible psychogeographic dimension.

Bix feels his drawings our best represented through the process of monoprinting, which allows him to create fast line works that reveal themselves postproduction.

He questions today’s built environment and wonders whether its design is more focused towards the perfect image than it is about understanding human processes and scales.

Bix lives and works in London as a Landscape Architect.

The Caledonian Road festival took place on 3rd July 2011 and was a massive success for the street and its local community. The festival is the first of its kind on the street attracting over 2000 people providing music, market stalls, live art, workshops etc. The road itself seems to spit different social classes either side of the it which makes for a diverse local community but also one with a high level of violence and crime. My involvement was to create a project that was about using locally resourced materials to collectively make something and also to collect information from people at the festival in order to understand local opinion. Firstly we made a huge entrance to the festival using shrubs, trees, plants stacked on palettes all resource on the road. We also printed postcards for people to leave there memories of the road over the years or feedback of the festival. There were many positive accounts of the festival as well as interesting memories of people who have grown up in the area.
The important thing I learnt was that the gesture of closing a road for a day for human activity can help rebuild the relationship between the local community and there immediate environment. A road without cars can be appreciated at more of a human scale and human pace.

Tsunami Survival Town (with Miguel Pampulha and Tibor Varga)

This project was entry for an ideas competition to design a town to survive tsunami for Japanese magazine ‘X-knowledge’. It was selected and will be published in the July 2011 issue. Our main concept is based on the idea of having high points strategically spread around the urban and the rural areas. In normal situations the mounds provide different functional and leisure activities for the city but in case of a tsunami they would be the foundation of the rebuilding process.
The alignment of the streets and houses with the direction of the main water flow would reduce the opposition against the pressure of the water produce in a tsunami. The walls perpendicular to the coast are non structural and made of light materials would be destroyed easily and a framework for rebuilding would be left.

Stanica train station

Stanica Slovakia is a creative approach to integrating infrastructure into the culture of everyday life of a town.

Stanica station is situated in the small town of Zilina, North Slovakia. The building was constructed in 1946 and was lived in by families who kept livestock and grew fruit trees around the station. It was abandoned and fell into disrepair after an overpass was built around it in 2002. Although the trains still operated, tickets were no longer sold.

A cultural organisation, Truc Spherique (an NGO linking contemporary arts with social development) created the project when they discovered the building while looking for a new home for their activities.

The project served to reanimate this neglected but important train station without displacing its former uses. The aim was to transform the building into a cultural centre wholly intergrated into the ordinary functioning life of the community.

The new train keeps the original function of the building as a railway station but connects it with space for creative and social activities. So that it now serves as a multifunctional platform that engages the community on many levels without making demands on their participation, and allows informal, exploratory and gradual discovery of the cultural activities within.

The times of the events and activities are planned to coincide with the railway timetable so all the communities along the line can observe or participate in the programme. "A spectator is not a spectator, a passenger is not a passenger and a railway station is not a boring place to wait for a train anymore".

The programme also includes a residential programme for young artists to work for one to three months in the ateliers, while schools, children and other visitors can meet the artists at work and discuss their works with them.

It thus engages children, young people, adults artists and spectators, and also rail passengers and random passers by, who might not otherwise encounter cultural activity.

New River Aquatic theatre

OASIS is based on the belief that a common, free mapping inventory is invaluable to NYC's communities and activists. The database includes information on physical features of the city from building use through to ecological status and individual trees, and also data on land ownership and the management organizations of open spaces.

The Open Accessible Space Information System enables new yorkers to characterize and learn about their surroundings, and also to participate in planning processes and to use the information to question planning authorities or propose new projects in a fully informed way.

Anyone can create their own map and add to the store of communal knowledge about the city which is collected and made available on the website. It even allows citizens to undertake "what if" scenarios, such as modelling the impact of a proposed new development.

Landschaftspark

The Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord, is built around a dissused steelworks that closed in 1985 and covers 230 hectares. What I found really interesting about the project is the level of community involvement for its remediation, reuse and continuous management.

The Landscape architects Latz and Parteners proposed a series of slow burn projects that aimed at reanimating the site in collaboration with local residents and allowing the process to develop as funding was found rather than requiring large initial expenditure.

The approach was to use and transform the existing industrial landscape and respect its scale and form, recycling its elements and finding new uses to complement the "found" spaces of the steelworks. The history of the region was to be celebrated rather than forgotten, enabling the area to regenerate itself slowly and gently without a radical break from its past. Something that was important to local residents.

What I admire the most about this project is that the development of the park intergrated programming with design from the beginning and did not set a "completion date". The designers considered that new uses and elements would be "discovered" by the process of starting to test new activities at the site, rather than imposing planned personnel ideas.

The project involved many local groups, including employment schemes and also encouraged groups to adopt and suggest uses for the industrial buildings, like scuba diving in a former gasometer and rock climbing in silos. All this helped engage the sense of public ownership that enables a natural evolution of function.

I beleive that it's a great example of how a landscape should be formed. No final plan, no imposed ideas and community engagement that challenges the "tick box" approach to community consultation.

The idea of the unfinished, I think should be applied to landscape architecture as much as possible. After all the landscape is all about the people that it serves, and so, should be designed with the capacity to adapt to changes and needs as quickly as they do.

Landscape Smörgåsbord!

Here are our (Matt, Leo (of Room60) and I) principles drawn from two meetings for making a book about the importance and glory of making outside space. Originally we had set out to make a pocket handbook for a landscape architect but it would seem that we are more interested in expressing the diversity, importance and scale of the subject. We have made a decision to provide a landscape smorgasbord that gives people a taste of the different things that make up the subject. Finding it very difficult to categorise these things we came up with an outline structure which gathers its information from all the landscape architects and designers we can find in order to understand what people in the know perceive the subject to be. The motivation for the production of this book comes out of a desire to inform people about LA and the politics of outside space and to raise awareness of the public connection to it. After meeting 1 we said the book needs to provide 'landscape gems' that fit into the following catorgeries. *Inspirational *Humerous *Techical *Recomendation We said that graphically each 'landscape gem' should inform its own graphic representation so as to be contextual- a comment on how we believe landscapes should be designed with a strong contextual connection. We said that it should promote and explain landscape architecture against its usally illinformed understanding. i.e "I do landscape architecture" said Jane "Oh..my garden in a right state at the moment...you should have a look at it!" John replied. Suggested title: No, I wont do your fucking garden! After meeting 2 we said that we need to outsource to landscape architects finding information to fit the following catergories. *Projects *Quotes *Theries *Concepts *Techniques We said that we didnt want to relate too heavily to the words landscape architecture (or any of the following: open space, public space, urbanism, landscape urbanism, external space) but not to refer to it as anything. giving it a word maybe pigeon holes it and doesnt express the vastness of the subject. We prefer descriptions like Jan Gehls 'Life between Buildings'. (but maybe this goes aginst the things we said in meeting 1?) We said that we should either hold some kind of event to invite landscapers to or ask questions via email or both. Suggested title: Landscape canapes

Francis Alÿs understands the importance of process in his work. The people in this video move the mountain an insignificant amount. The important thing is that the process in which the people went through to move it was a rewarding and enjoyable experience. If we design with the same principles then we can be less focused on the final outcome and get more human pleasure from something that is processing.

Q: What does it mean to build on a human scale?

A: You put an emphasis on the people walking and bicycling and also on public life in general. That means you start with the people and end with all the other things. You have motor traffic and buildings as second priorities. If you don’t start with the people side of the story, you can never add the people side after you have made cars happy and placed a number of buildings around a place. You have to start with the people.
So that’s one side of it. The other side is something which takes its point of departure in the human body and human senses. If you go to a place like Venice, which was made for pedestrians, you’ll find what I call 3-miles-an-hour architectural. Everything is detailed and scaled in such a way that you have a glorious time moving at 3 miles per hour. But also we can talk about 50-miles-an-hour architecture, which would be the scale of maybe suburbs, and that scale is really awful to walk and bicycle in because it's not meant to be negotiated at 3 miles per hour. It’s made for 50 miles per hour. And these two scales are completely different. And you can see them. All the old cities would have the 3 miles per hour scale, and maybe in the new cities, the planners have been completely confused about scale.

Norfolk map and Paris map which was inspired by Guy Debords frustration of how the medieval streets of paris had been torn down in order to build the Haussmans boulevards and large transportation systems which controlled the way in which people moved around the city.

Present-day urbanism’s main problem is ensuring the smooth circulation of a rapidly increasing number of motor vehicles. A future urbanism will undoubtedly apply itself to no less utilitarian projects, but in the rather different context of psychogeographical possibilities." In these works I wanted to try collage the parisienne boulevards with the reletivly untouched lands of Norfolk- my birth home to try to personally understand the effect of large transportation networks. and urban planning. The scale of the Parision map is much larger than the Norfolk one but maybe shares simular scales to the disstructive developement of new cities in China. It seems that the third world are not learning from the mistakes in urban planning.
